107. Mr Auld reiterated that access for recreational users will continue to be provided if
safety aspects are complied with. He also noted that this dam has a unique feature
where the weir can be easily accessed by river users, unlike other hydro-electric
schemes where the weir is fenced off. This weir has been available for use and will
continue to be available under the proposed hydro-electric scheme.
108. Mr Auld reiterated that Iwi values are recognised by the applicant

4.2 Mr B E Pope, Compliance Manager, provided an overview to the Committee on the
reported incidents and answered questions concerning officer assessments of the
incidents. Mr Pope noted to the Committee that the Council’s IRIS database system
has a new section – non-compliance incidents found during routine compliance
monitoring. This is now reported separately to the Committee.

This Opunake Wastewater Treatment Scheme comprises two distinct components.
The first is the interception of the town sewage by diverting the terminal sewer into a
new pumping station.
This pumping station is
breakwater situated on the point between
Middleton Bay and Opunake Beach. During the period from 1985 to 1990, a new
wastewater treatment system was developed by a Wastewater Disposal Working
Party (comprised of representatives of environmental groups, iwi liaison,
Department of Conservation and various local authorities) in conjunction with the
South Taranaki District Council’s consultants, with the new system constructed and
operative by May 1994.
