locations on the river continues today. Each whakaparu was named and these
names remain and continue to be used by Te Atiawa today. The mara (gardens) along
the river included Te Rare, Mangahinau, Panekeneke, Opakaru, Te Ramarama and
Mangaemiemi. The ururpā include Te Rohutu, Manaaiti, Pukehou, Teremutu and
Ngangana.

Because the catchments of this FMU are
interspersed across the region’s coastline, it
includes the rohe of many Taranaki iwi and
hapū, including Ngaa Rauru, Ngāti Ruanui
and Ngāruahine in the south and Te Atiawa,
Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama in the north.
There is one marae located in the town of Waverley. Each iwi, hapū and whānau hold tikanga (protocols)
and mātauranga (knowledge) relevant to the awa for which they are kaitiaki (guardians). These significant
relationships reflect the
undulating land,
dairy farming becomes more prominent. Close to the coast, land is susceptible to drying out in summer
months which is mitigated in some areas with irrigation.
The rohe of Ngaa Rauru, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine and Ngāti Maru and 12 marae are located within the

meetings have been held by the district councils with Māori at hapū and marae
level. Legally it is appropriate that discussions are held with Marae Trusts as the
landowners, though iwi authorities should be made aware that these conversations are
occurring. Recommendation made by WK that all contact should be recorded in writing
to be able to stand up at any later stage.
