consent or a rule in a regional plan, or it falls within some particular categories set out
in Section 14.
Greymouth Petroleum holds water abstraction permit 5384-1 to cover the abstraction of
550 cubic metres/day (6.4 litres/second) of groundwater from a bore for oilfield
waterflooding purposes in the Waiwhakaiho Catchment. This permit was issued by the
Taranaki Regional Council on 18 September 1998 under Section 87(e) of the

Measure: Nitrate levels in groundwater.
Target: No sites in the state of the environment monitoring programme consistently above NZ human
drinking water standard (NZDWS); improvement (decrease) in nitrate levels on a regional basis.
Baseline: Trend analysis over the period 2010 to 2020 showed an improvement in nitrate concentrations in
one bore (3%) and declining trend in two bores (6%). No significant change in nitrate
concentration was identified in 29 bores (91%) of
potential effects of any groundwater abstraction are assessed by the
Council during the processing of a resource consent application for a groundwater take. The potential
impact of any new take on existing groundwater users and ecological receptors form a major component of
this assessment.
Groundwater levels in coastal bores should generally be maintained above mean sea level to avoid the risk
of sea water intrusion into the freshwater aquifers. Increased salinity in previously fresh

1 June 2032.
Condition 1 sets limits on the volume and rate of abstraction.
Condition 2 requires that the bore is labelled.
Conditions 3 to 7 deal with installation of a water meter and datalogger, recording and
provision of data, accuracy of the equipment, access, and repairs and maintenance.
Condition 8 requires the consent holder to adopt the best practicable option to prevent
or minimise adverse environmental effects.

Samples of groundwater were obtained pre-fracturing to provide a baseline reference
of groundwater composition, with a further round of sampling carried out post-
fracturing for comparison with baseline results.
Where access to the bore was available, samples were obtained using a pneumatic
bladder pump, using a low-flow sampling methodology. Samples taken from wide
diameter wells were obtained directly from the well,
