the First Gas pipeline system for domestic use. Stormwater from the Cheal-A wellsite and Production Station
is collected in a large skimmer pit in the northwest corner of the site prior to discharge.

1.3 Resource consents
1.3.1 Water abstraction permit
Section 14 of the RMA stipulates that no person may take, use, dam or divert any water, unless the activity is
expressly allowed for by a resource consent or a rule in a regional plan, or it falls
the district’s steep and exposed hillslopes, where soils
tend to be thin and dry. Here, kamahi is the dominant canopy tree, although
rewarewa can sometimes be co-dominant especially on upper hillslopes.
Other tree species that may also be present include black beech, hinau,
tawheowheo, and where there has been a tree fall or disturbance, prickly
mingimingi, tall mingimingi and manuka. Because kamahi is such a hardy species
it often dominates the driest, steepest or most
stormwater pond is discharged by pipe onto land to the east of the site where it flows
into an unnamed tributary of the Manawapou River.

SDC holds water permit 1276-3 to take water from the Te Popo Stream a tributary of
the Manganui River in the Waitara catchment for Midhirst community public water
supply purposes. This permit was issued by the Council on 9 June 2003 under Section
87(d) of the RMA. It is due to expire on 1 June 2021.
SDC holds water permit 1337-2 to take water from a bore in the vicinity of Toko Stream
in the Patea catchment
contained in volcanic deposits. Most of this is used for
agricultural purposes (Taylor & Evans, 1999). The Taranaki Volcanics Formation
includes the present ring plain surrounding Mt Taranaki and that of the earlier
volcanic centres. It comprises significant lava, pyroclastic (air fall material including
ash) and lahar deposits. Thicknesses of up to 170 m have been encountered near
Stratford. However, in general the formation thins concentrically away from the
volcanic source (Mount

Swift Energy NZ Ltd [Swift]. It was transferred to Origin Energy on 11 April 2008 and
is due to expire on 1 June 2016.

Council on 24 January 2001 as a resource consent under

under Rule 51 of the Regional Freshwater Plan for Taranaki and is classified as a
discretionary activity. The application may be non-notified if no parties are deemed to
be adversely affected by the proposed activity.
At the time of writing, there were a total of 19 current resource consents for DWI in
Taranaki. However, several resource consents have been issued for relatively short-
term activities during
regional plan, or it falls within some particular categories set
out in Section 14.
SFF Waitotara holds water abstraction permit 2261 to take up to 1300 cubic
metres/day (17.6 litres/second) of water from three groundwater bores in the
vicinity of the Waitotara River for meat processing purposes. This permit was issued
by the Taranaki Regional Council on 23 January 1998 as a resource consent under
Section 87(e) of the Resource Management Act. It is due to expire on 1 June 2016.
