During the 2022-2023 monitoring period Remediation NZ Ltd demonstrated a good level of both
environmental and administrative performance.

Periphyton monitoring in the Taranaki region
In 2018, Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) initiated a monthly State of Environment (SoE) periphyton
monitoring programme, tailored to the requirements of the NPS-FM. Twelve sites are included in this
monitoring programme, many of which were selected to align with sites monitored in the state of the
Patea Freezing Works detailed site investigation report - Appendix 12: chain of custody; sampling sheets.

Baseline states for sediment
The NPS-FM requires all regional councils to identify baseline states for all attributes described in Appendix
2A and 2B of the NPS-FM within each Freshwater Management Unit (FMU). When compared against national
bottom lines and the relevant objectives for an FMU, baselines provide the
condition in New Zealand lakes. User Manual Version 2.

Lake SPI surveying in the Taranaki Region
In 2021, Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) engaged NIWA to survey three lakes (Lakes Kaikura, Mangawhio,
and Rotokare) using LakeSPI (Table 3, Figure 1). These lakes were the first in the region to be assessed using
this method. Lake SPI surveys were completed in November and December 2021. Detailed
