Oaonui Stream. During 2019-2020 5,000 litre tanks were utilised to store excess volumes when rainfall
exceeded capacity of the ponds and recirculation system. Investigations into the potential environmental
impacts of this activity and planning for remediation of the facility are continuing. Wood Group intended to
relocate the training centre to a new site in New Plymouth in early 2020, however the timeline for this has
been delayed due to Covid-19.

The inspection was undertaken following very heavy rainfall during the preceding week. The stormwater
system at Cheal Production Station was operating effectively, with all stormwater conveyed to the two big
lined skimmer pits. There was no discharge to the nearby stream observed during the inspection.
Flaring was observed at the time of the inspection and this was giving rise to a small amount of smoke in

sampling, however sampling results on 11 February 2013 correlated with elevated
Waitara River flows a week preceding sampling (Figure 7). Conductivity results
were high at the time of sampling indicating no freshwater influence (Figure 3).
At Turanga Reef, ‘Alert’ mode was reached on 18 February (320 cfu/100ml, Figure
11); again this result was unexplained and did not coincide with any elevated
Waitara River flows during the days preceding (Figure 7).

Matters Arising
The impacts of recent extreme rainfall in the Gisborne region and the discharge of
forestry slash to rivers was raised and a discussion held over the likelihood of this
being an issue for Taranaki and how this could be managed under the NES –
Production Forestry. Concerns had been previously expressed by Cr Boyde about
similar incidents in Stratford District.

discharged via a sand filter prior to entering the NPDC stormwater system, which discharges to the
