the Mangawhero and Mangati streams (MCIs of 72 in summer), and thus represent
‘natural’ more than degraded conditions. MCI scores increased in both streams further down
in their catchments, and notably these higher scores were below reaches where there have
been or are significant discharges regulated by the Council.
In the spring survey, 91% of the sites had MCI values that were similar to or significantly
