water from an approximately 136 km2 catchment that originates near the summit of Mount
Taranaki.
The climate is generally mild, with relatively high humidity and fairly high, evenly
distributed annual rainfall - with a catchment-wide annual rainfall of approximately 3,500
mm. The soils are typically volcanic, and include deep ash soils and well-drained alluvial
soils along the rivers. Slopes within the catchment range from gently undulating to
strongly rolling.

Groundwater quantity
Rainfall or river water that seeps from soils into the pore
spaces between fractures of solid rock or sediments, like
sand or gravel, is known as groundwater. Groundwater is
the largest source of accessible freshwater in the world,
accounting for around 98% of freshwater available for use
on Earth. While groundwater is generally hidden beneath
the land surface, many of the region’s springs, rivers and
lakes are sustained by groundwater

conditions act to remove contaminants through
attenuation mechanisms such as dilution, dispersion, mechanical filtration, volatilization,
biological activity, ion exchange and adsorption on soil particle surface, chemical
reactions and decay.
If the area is in fact contaminated, the two types of contamination likely to be found are
those related to landfill pollutants (leacheates) and underground tanks (oil seepage).
Leacheates form plumes that move in the direction of groundwater; as the plume
is best grown in moist but
well-drained humus-rich soil in partial shade
and is undemanding.
Currently it is flowering beautifully in the
