In 1950, William Douglas Cook, founder of
Eastwoodhill, our national arboretum, was looking
for land to grow rhododendrons. He found an ideal
site, a 26-hectare block of heavily logged bush high
on a saddle between Taranaki Maunga and the
Kaitake Ranges. Renowned Taranaki businessman
and horticulturist Russell Matthews (later Sir Russell
Matthews K.B. O.B.E), then brought his own
passion to the project, enlisting the financial
support of 23 other rhododendron

Completing the AEE section of this form will be sufficient for most applications. However for activities with actual or potential
effect that are significant, a separate comprehensive AEE report including specific investigations may be required.

Locally, the Council is reviewing its Regional Air Quality Plan,
as required by law. It will be combined with management
of water and land resources into an integrated Natural
Resources Plan for the region. The review process includes
public consultation, to ensure the new Plan reflects
community aspirations for air quality, and will reflect the
changing industrial landscape, improved knowledge, and
community expectations of our region.
