Taranaki Sawmills Ltd during one wet weather survey. The levels were found to be well
within the empirical NOECs (no observable effect concentrations) for aquatic life developed by the
European Chemical Agency and the Cawthron Institute.
Monitoring of groundwater and leachate in relation to the old landfill area off Bewley Road showed that all
of the samples collected from the three monitoring bores complied with consent limits.

shallow water table. Test bores were augured to 10 m in the pit area, revealing extensive compacted, low
permeable clays underlying coastal dune sands. Pit construction revealed mostly tightly packed sand at the
pit bases (approximately 4-5 m below surface). Average annual rainfall for the site is 1,023 mm (taken from
the nearby ‘Duffy’ monitoring station). As with the other South Taranaki coastal sites, this site is subject to
strong winds.

The Company held seven discharge consents covering their DWI
activities (Table 1) during the period under review. Five consents
were exercised by the Company during the period.
