Fig. 4 Spaced planting on erosion-prone hillslope
Pasture suppressed by the trees is counter-balanced by
growth on areas that would have been lost to erosion,
had the trees not been planted (see the Council’s
information sheet Pole planting -what are the benefits?
for additional information).
On badly eroded ground
Close-planting with trees is needed to stabilise small
patches of hill face where erosion is particularly severe.

quality that can generally be reversed with
appropriate soil and land use management.
When considering the nine sites that have been sampled three times since 1995, the most noticeable trend
is a decrease in macroporosity (low macroporosity accounts for 50% of all the indicators that were outside
target ranges). Reduced macroporosity can indicate soil compaction, especially in dairying soils where stock
treading can compact soil. Decreased macroporosity levels are a concern, especially
levels sufficiently high enough to
create mutual shelter among the established trees.
Damage and mortality caused by late spring or
summer frosts are important factors causing failure of
Douglas-fir plantings. If severe frosts occur at the
time when seedlings are flushing, soft foliage may be
killed and buds and bark may be damaged. Frost
damage can allow fungal attacks and mortality can be
high. Frost damage is most probable whenever air-
drainage is poor, therefore, frost hollows should be

1.2.3 Seating and sealing of casing
(a) Seating in consolidated rock
In consolidated formations, if steel casing is used, the casing can be seated by
driving it into the surface until a seal is obtained.
(b) Sealing in open hole
Casing in an open hole must be cemented into casing to create a seal and to
maintain the structural integrity of the bore.
