The dune system is relatively unstable – prone to wind erosion and eroding
inland. In the past the Taranaki Catchment Commission (the Taranaki
Regional Council’s predecessor) carried out extensive soil conservation
works in the area to prevent the spread of sand onto adjoining productive
dairy pasture. There is an Urupa (burial ground) near the middle of the area,
which is an important Maori heritage site.
