Policy 3.1.1 seeks to retain as far as possible in
their natural state, the quantities levels and rates
of flow of water and the quality of water within
the Hangatahua (Stony) catchment.
In addition to the objectives and policies seeking
to protect the Hangatahua (Stony) River, Policy
6.1.1 of the Freshwater Plan identified two other
catchments or reaches where the taking and use
of water
comprising 18% of the district’s population. Iwi and hapū of the Taranaki region
are Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, Ngāruahine, Ngāti Maru (Te Iwi o Maruwharanui), Ngāti
Mutunga, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Tama, Taranaki Iwi, and Te Atiawa.
In June 2020, Taranaki’s unemployment rate was at 4.3% with only small variations from one district to
another (compared to 4% nationally).
Households without access to a motor vehicle is highest in New Plymouth district (7.2% of
resource utilisation, to move closer to achieving sustainable development of the
region’s resources.

Besides discussing the various details of the performance and extent of compliance by the consent holders,

The $20m 'shovel-ready' grant to the Yarrow Stadium
repair and refurbishment project is great news for the
region and its ratepayers, who can expect a reduction of
just over 40% in their Yarrow Stadium rates from July
2021.
Works were put on hold during the lockdown while we
conducted a thorough review of the project in the light
of changing circumstances. The review gave us a clearer
understanding of the stadium's prospects.
Work on the project began ramping up again shortly after
the
damage caused by the June 2015 flood.
The monitoring showed that overall the scheme was operated well, and within resource
consent requirements, with no breaches of lake level requirements, residual flow requirements
or rise and recession rate restrictions for the lower Patea River. The Company coordinated a
number of investigations and reports during the reporting period. The bulk of the required
monitoring has been undertaken prior to the 2015-2016 period, although the current report
due to the time it has taken to resolve the
loss of the McColl’s Quarry flow recorder in the June 2015 flood.
The monitoring showed that overall the scheme was operated well, and within resource consent
requirements, with no breaches of lake level requirements or rise and recession rate restrictions for the
lower Patea River. There were a small number of occasions when the residual flow in the Lower Patea River
dropped below the consented limit, but this was due in-part to a Transpower
ultimately, through the refinement of methods
and considered responsible resource utilisation, to move closer to achieving sustainable development of the
region’s resources.
1.1.4 Evaluation of environmental performance
Besides discussing the various details of the performance and extent of compliance by the consent holders,
this report also assigns a rating as to each Company’s environmental and administrative performance during
the period under review. The rating categories are high, good,
some upper catchments channel stability deteriorating at a faster
rate than others.
As all channels discharge through the occupied ring plain any changes in channel
condition may affect adjoining property, public and private assets, infrastructure and
communications. It is in relation to these matters that Council has statutory functions
and responsibilities.
