walk. Camping is popular on the western shore and the lake is
an attraction for local and international tourists.
However, sedimentation in the lake has considerably reduced
its depth, reducing the suitability for water based activities. As
such, the use of the lake for these activities has declined over
recent years.
The shallower waters have also encouraged the growth of
vegetation in the

steps and get stuck in to further initiatives, such as focusing in the outdoor education area
in the gully adjacent the back field and looking at water quality in the stream among other ideas.

The TSB TOPEC site was formerly managed by YMCA Camp Huinga who had been
facilitating outdoor activities at this site since 1954. TSB TOPEC was formed in 1986 and in
1988 The YMCA agreed to their taking over the YMCA Camp Huinga site.

Waikaramihi Waikaramihi is the name given to the marae tawhito that is situated within the Nukumaru Recreation
Reserve, on the coast between Waiinu and Tuaropaki. Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi traditionally camped at
Waikaramihi from October to March each year. The main food gathering area was between the Waitootara
river mouth and Tuaropaki.
