Taranaki Regional Council officers
are providing a number of iwi and
hapū in the region with training and
advice to allow them to monitor the
health of waterways.
The monitoring utilises a ‘Stream
Health Monitoring and Assessment
Kit’ (SHMAK) developed by
NIWA.
An initial approach for assistance
came from the region’s
align planning outcomes and
involve tangata whenua and communities in decision
making. Unencumbered by the requirements of the SPA
and NBEA, we can do this in a way that works best for
Taranaki under existing legislation.
In particular, we think spatial planning is a good idea. A
regional spatial plan would give Taranaki a consistent
and coherent plan for future development and
environmental protection. It could map out growth
areas, infrastructure corridors, environmentally
identified as Key Native Ecosystems.
