PFOS
Mr G K Bedford, Director-Environment Quality, provided an update to Members on
the Council’s detection of elevated levels of chemicals associated with firefighting foam
(PFAS) found in eels in two South Taranaki streams (Oaonui and Ngapirau). Iwi and
local residents have been notified. The Council’s investigation into PFOS was
undertaken following the discovery (in 2017) of drinking water

the Policy and Planning Committee regarding Māori wards where Iwi representatives
are present for feedback.

policy and regulations, wetlands have become a national
focus for preservation and restoration.
Council officers are working on the ground identifying
and mapping wetlands, confirming swamp forests, and

and restore wetland habitats.

2.2.1.1 Deposition gauge monitoring
Deposition gauges were deployed on two occasions during the monitoring period. The first deployment
began on 27 January 2023 and lasted 21 days. The second deployment began on 17 February 2023 and also
lasted 21 days.
A site map marking the location of the gauges around the Downer site is shown in Figure 2, with the
monitoring site locations also described in Table 2. The only monitoring location outside the boundary of
the site is AIR006305.

3. Require that riparian restoration uses indigenous species that
were sampled. Both were clean with low volumes as they had been released
earlier in the week. The site was very tidy and well maintained. The draft PSI and new groundwater
management plan were under review, to be finalised shortly. There had been 70 responses to the public
survey so far. A letter drop had been carried out the previous week to over five hundred residential and
commercial properties in the area. A meeting with iwi had been held two days prior to explain the technical
