Sea spurge
A serious threat to New Zealand’s beaches
The coastal weed sea spurge,
Euphorbia paralias, was found
at a beach near Aotea Harbour
in the Waikato in 2012, and a
single plant was detected at
Mokau on the North Island’s
west coast in 2019. This invasive
weed would seriously impact our
coastal environments if it became

an underpass and automatic gates were considered.
Project 2 — Total cost $210,000 to design, construct and trial various pedestrian safety mitigation
devices along the Coastal Walkway in New Plymouth. Footpath decals, illuminated LEDs in the
footpath and voice message devices are being installed and trialled.

enhancing our coastline and waterways, at the same time
facilitating growth, prosperity, jobs and opportunities in our

Background to variation request
SH43 has been experiencing an increase in tourism traffic, with the 12km unsealed section
through the Tangarakau Gorge becoming more of an inhibitor as tourist numbers grow through
the central plateau and the Taranaki Region.
The Taranaki Economic Development Action Plan has prioritised the sealing of SH43 as one of
the top priorities for the region.
