Human
Drinking Water requires regional councils to take steps to ensure catchments used for
municipal water supply do not become contaminated beyond the capability of treatment
plants to provide safe water supplies. The Council’s ongoing programme for monitoring for
the presence of pesticides in groundwater, together with the responsibilities of the Ministry
of Health and water supply authorities to ensure the wholesome quality of community water
for human consumption, already provides some
District Council instigated plans to establish a large landfill in the
Eltham area. The purpose of this site was to ultimately accept waste from the South Taranaki
and Stratford Districts. The plan was changed to allow for a regionalised approach to waste
disposal and the site is now currently proposed to an option to be the replacement regional
landfill once the facility at Colson Rd, New Plymouth has reached capacity. The final
decision is subject to review of all alternatives to undertaken by

from the Company’s sawmilling operation in Inglewood. The Company sells most of its
woodchip and sawdust as calf litter. The remaining material consisting of bark, soil and soiled
woodchip/sawdust is sent to the Bristol Road site for disposal.
