The NPS-FM includes attribute band tables for both suspended fine sediment and deposited fine sediment
attributes as set out in Table 1 and Table 2. The sediment class of a given river segment dictates the
attribute value ranges defining the band grade. Sediment classes are determined by the climate,
topography, and geology classification (as defined in the River Environment Classification; REC1) of
upstream segments predominately contributing flow to a given segment. To determine

sites. Sampling is carried out monthly, regardless of weather and flow conditions, and has been undertaken
at most sites since around 2004/2005. Additionally, NIWA undertakes monthly monitoring of ammonia,
nitrate-nitrite nitrogen (NNN), and DRP concentrations at one additional site under the National River
Water Quality Network (NRWQN). This site has a long-term record extending back to 1989. This brings the
total number of long-term monitoring sites to 25
Businesses and homes in The Valley in New Plymouth will get improved protection from flooding with an upgrade to the lower Waiwhakaiho River Flood Control Scheme. The upgrades by Taranaki Regional Council will raise two sections of the existing defences including along the stopbank and a flood wall which protect shops and houses near Constance Street and Rifle Range Road. Council Rivers Manager Chris Vicars says revised flood modelling after a large flood event in 2017 identified two sections

The Waitara River is set to gain extra benefits from a national pilot study focused on the best ways to assess any microbiological health risks to freshwater swimmers. The ESR-led study will include detailed analyses of up to 80 samples from the river at Bertrand Rd, one of only 16 sites to be sampled nationally over the coming few months. The river’s inclusion is hailed as great news for its mana whenua and the Taranaki Regional Council, who have begun working together to make the best use of

People heading out to swimming spots across Taranaki this summer are being encouraged to wait a few days after heavy rain before diving in. Taranaki Regional Council’s summer “Can I Swim Here?" monitoring programme starts this week, running through until the end of March 2024. Every Tuesday staff will take water samples at 41 popular swimming spots at lakes, rivers and beaches across the region. Results take two days to come back from the lab, and are posted on the Land, Air, Water Aotearoa
June bucked the trend for more than average monthly rainfall since the start of 2023 with an average of 74.9mm, or just 58% of the typical amount for the month. Year to date rainfall ranges from 5% less rainfall at Uruti at Kaka Rd, and 45% more rainfall at Whanganui at Mataimona Trig, with an average of 16% more than normal. Mean river flows for June were
