Introduction
Like all regional councils in New Zealand, the Taranaki Regional Council monitors the overall state of the
environment within the boundaries of its region. Not only is monitoring a requirement under the Resource
Management Act 1991 (RMA), it provides important feedback on how well the Council is promoting the sole
purpose of the RMA—the sustainable management of Taranaki’s natural and physical resources.

What’s in the Plan and what it would mean for surfers and othersProposed
The Taranaki Regional Council is reviewing its Coastal Plan, which
is the ‘rule book’ governing the use, development and protection
of what’s known as the coastal marine area.
The review is an opportunity to make a great place even better.
Our coastline is a physically rugged and special environment
Plymouth
District, based on current and future levels of demand, supply and development capacity. Required
every three years, the HBA provides a robust, comprehensive and frequently-updated evidence base
that will inform and guide development capacity and planning decisions in the district. It will also
assist with development of minimum targets for sufficient, feasible housing development capacity for
inclusion in the Regional Policy Statement for Taranaki and the New Plymouth District Plan. This
