councillor at council. Councillors
have a responsibility to represent their communities. The Māori constituency councillor will
have a particular responsibility to represent people of Māori descent and bring forward
Māori views and aspirations. However, they also represent the entire region.
“Constituencies” are the parts of a council area that have been determined by population
and communities of interest. These can be either general constituencies or Māori
constituencies.
Q1. What is a regional council?
A A regional council is one type of local authority
and generally looks after region-wide issues
rather than local issues.
It is different from a territorial authority
(which is either a city or district council), but
there are no differences in the way that they
generally operate.
Q2. What do regional councils do?
A Regional councils’ responsibilities include:
- managing the effects of using freshwater,
land, air and coastal waters
(the focus of which is to promote sustainable management of natural
resources) and supported by the relevant Regional Plan, if adverse environmental effects are avoided, remedied or mitigated.
Part 2 and policy assessment I adopt the RMA assessment above
Consultation and Affected Parties
