Community feedback sought to help improve bus network

Pop-up events are planned across the region to gather feedback on bus routes, timetables and other details that will help shape a new and improved bus network in the region

In-person and online public consultation on Taranaki Regional Council-run bus services opens on Monday 22 April and closes at 4pm on Monday 6 May 2024.

It’s the first part of a three-phase process, with the feedback forming a crucial component of the Single Stage Business Case to be presented to the NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi with the goal of securing funding for network improvements.

Transport Engagement Manager, Cheryl Gazley, says this is an exciting phase as it’s an opportunity for the Council to hear directly what would make bus travel more attractive to locals.

"We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty, the stuff that really matters to people. Previous consultations have identified common improvement area, and now it's time for specific details.

“The community has asked for enhancements in four focus areas: bus routes, frequency, weekend services and key destinations in Taranaki. We’re seeking specific feedback on where you think route adjustments are needed, preferred frequency – how often should the bus come, crucial destinations we may be missing and optimal service times – should there be an earlier or later bus on your route?"

The Council is keen to hear from both current bus users and those who do not use the bus regularly or at all.

“Tell us why. Are there changes we could make to timetables, routes, destinations etc. that would make public transport a more realistic or attractive option to you?”

Ms Gazley says the proposed network changes are timely, with bus operator contracts up for tender later this year, coming into effect in September 2025.

"We plan to share the results of this consultation in May, allowing the public to indicate their preferred options., This will directly influence the bus network changes you will see in 2025.”

Taranaki Regional Council is hosting a series of pop-up events across the region and invites the community to participate and contribute to shaping the future of public transport in Taranaki. An online feedback tool is also available for individuals to share their bus network ideas and suggestions.

The proposed revitalisation of the bus network aligns with the draft Regional Land Transport Plan and Better Travel Choices that were consulted on in 2023, providing robust supporting evidence for investment.
