2.1 Inspections
Three scheduled compliance monitoring inspections were performed during the year
under review in relation to the wastewater treatment system at Wai-inu Beach
Settlement.
15 December 2014
A few weeds were growing on the sand filters at the time of the inspection; however,
there was no surface ponding of waste water. No sewage odours were detected near
the filters. The camp was quiet with one campervan on site. Seawater samples were
collected.

Waikaramihi Waikaramihi is the name given to the marae tawhito that is situated within the Nukumaru Recreation
Reserve, on the coast between Waiinu and Tuaropaki. Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi traditionally camped at
Waikaramihi from October to March each year. The main food gathering
involved in a school camp or for those studying
freshwater native fish. Students will need torches
to spot some of our native freshwater fish,
including with luck, the banded kokopu which
is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most
endangered freshwater fish species.

during their school camp at Mimi Estuary, showing students how to identify predator and
shorebird footprints in the sand. The students also made a tūturiwhatu (New Zealand dotterel)
nest, providing a clear demonstration of how vulnerable shorebird chicks and eggs are during
breeding season.
