Taranaki Regional Council officers are investigating to find the source of oil that has washed up at the southern end of Oākura Beach. They are also cleaning up the small amount of oil that has been found, and checking other locations.
The investigation follows a complaint from a member of the public, says the Council’s Director-Resource Management, Fred McLay.
Contaminated sand is being manually removed from the beach for appropriate disposal at a licensed facility.
Council staff are trained in oil-spill response, clean-up and investigation techniques.
The investigation is continuing, says Mr McLay.
