If you want to make your mark on your region, nominations open this week for candidates standing for Taranaki Regional Council in this year’s local elections.
Nominations open on Friday, 15 July and there’s a chance to find out how to stand and what it means to be a councillor on 16 July at an information day in Hāwera, Stratford and New Plymouth.
Council Chief Executive Steve Ruru, says the huge raft of Government reforms from freshwater to resource management make it an exciting time to become a councillor and urged people to put themselves forward to shape the future of the region.
“Councillors get the privilege and honour of supporting, advocating and providing leadership for our community and it is hugely rewarding to work for the 120,000 people of Taranaki and help make the big decisions which improves their lives and our environment.
“I encourage you to stand up for your community and help us to keep improving lifestyles, supporting livelihoods and taking Taranaki forward.”
There are changes at this year’s elections as a Representation Review in 2021 established a Taranaki Māori constituency in addition to the New Plymouth, North Taranaki, Stratford and South Taranaki general constituencies. The number of elected members remains at 11 with the South Taranaki constituency dropping from three to two members with one member elected from the Māori constituency.
The information day, running in conjunction with the South Taranaki, Stratford and New Plymouth district councils, is being held at the councils’ offices and facilities starting at 9am in Hāwera at the TSB Hub on Camberwell Road, 12pm in Stratford at 63 Miranda Street and finishing in New Plymouth from 3pm at 84 Liardet Street.
