The Taranaki Regional Council is involved with transport in a number of ways.

These roles include:
- Providing leadership, policy advice and administrative support for the Regional Transport Committee.
- Preparing regional transport and transport-related strategy documents.
- Preparing the Regional Land Transport Programme.
- Providing contracted bus services.
- Providing the Total Mobility scheme.
- Harbour management.
- Ownership of Port Taranaki Limited.
The Council is only one of the organisations involved in the provision and administration of transport in Taranaki.
Other organisations and their functions include:
New Zealand Transport Agency
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is a Crown entity established on 1 August 2008, bringing together the functions of Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand to provide an integrated approach to transport planning, funding and delivery.
This central Government agency is responsible for:
- Managing the State Highway network, most of which is owned by the Crown. State Highways in Taranaki include SH3 and SH3A, SH43, SH44 and SH45.
- Allocating funding to road control authorities.
- Developing policy on road safety such as driver licensing and speed limits.
- Promoting road safety through a range of educational programmes.
- Developing land transport safety standards.
Ministry of Transport
As the Government's principal transport policy adviser, the Ministry both leads and generates policy.
The Ministry of Transport acts as the Minister of Transport's agent for managing the interface with the transport Crown entities including the NZ Transport Agency.
District Councils
District Councils own and manage the public roads in New Zealand. District Councils in our region include the New Plymouth District Council, the Stratford District Council and the South Taranaki District Council.
Police
The New Zealand Police are responsible for enforcing legislation governing driver behaviour and vehicle road worthiness.
