SWIFT ENERGY has been charged with allowing contaminating well-drilling fluids to escape from its Kowhai-2 well into a North Taranaki stream.
The exploration well is near Ngatimaru Rd, Tikorangi.
The charge, before the New Plymouth District Court, alleges that in allowing the discharge of drilling mud, sediment and contaminants on December 11 last year, Swift breached theResource Management Act 1991.
About 600m of the stream was affected,Taranaki Regional Council resource management director Fred McLay said. "It was a low level of impact but it shouldn't have happened."
