native species and is regenerating. The
wetland contains a considerable number of pest plant species which will
require significant effort to bring under control. The site lies in close
proximity to other Key Native Ecosystems in the area, including Matekai
Park and Mckie QEII Covenant.

Flora
The wetland is dominated by planted flax (Phormium tenax) and cabbage
trees (Cordyline australis) with natural regeneration of cutty grass (Carex
geminata). Of note is
the addition of
reference to biological control for Wild broom.

caused the loss or decline
of many native plant and wildlife species. Some are now
extinct in the region because of the impact of predators. Our
forests and the dawn chorus have largely fallen silent as
introduced pests eat our native birds’ eggs and chicks, prey
on nesting adults, and eat the plants and insects that the
birds feed on.
Even across the farm and urban landscapes, possums and
other predators are a significant risk to our economy.
Possums already
first
confirmed sighting in Taranaki. This invasive
pest plant clogs waterways, increases the
risk of flooding and can be toxic to
livestock. Inspections so far indicate it is
confined to the lagoon system. A further
survey is planned for November when the
plant would be most visible. Meanwhile,
a wallaby found in Mōkau also sparked
concern, given its proximity to Taranaki.
