It is a significant asset held by the Council on behalf of the regional community and the port is widely recognised as a core component of the transport infrastructure of the region.

Port Taranaki is a significant regional asset. The Council is committed to continued public ownership.

A 2007 report by Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL), commissioned by Venture Taranaki, concluded that Port Taranaki is an integral part of the region's transport infrastructure, associated with industries that turn over almost $6.3 billion, generate $2.2 billion in value-added GDP and employ close to 19,000 workers.

The report found that whilst Port Taranaki and its directly related activity employs 1485 workers and contributes $290m to the region's GDP in its own right, it is a key participant in industries and activities that account for almost half of Taranaki's GDP and a third of its employment.
