Lower Waitara River

The Taranaki Regional Council is responsible for the management of land on either side of the lower Waitara River, and the river bed of the river, to minimise the impact of floods on the Waitara township.

In managing the reserve for flood protection purposes, the Council recognises and acknowledges the significance of the Waitara Awa for Manukorihi hapū, Otaraua hapū, Ngāti Rahiri hapū and Pukerangiora hapū.

The Council acknowledges the awa is at the heart of Waitara for both Tangata Whenua and the wider community.

The Lower Waitara River Local Purpose Reserve Management Plan is an important document because it provides a framework to guide future management of the reserve by identifying significant management issues and setting out the objectives and policies to address these.

The Management Plan is available in PDF format on this web page (see link below), or from the Taranaki Regional Council, 47 Cloten Road, Stratford, ph 0800 736 222 or email info@trc.govt.nz.
