Backyard burning and incinerators

Burning rubbish in the backyard is not environmentally friendly.

The Taranaki Regional Council and the district councils of Taranaki advise residents not to burn rubbish in backyard incinerators. While it is not illegal to have and operate one, they cause problems.

The smoke and smell upset neighbours and smoke, any smoke, causes air pollution problems that affect people's health. If it burns it can probably be recycled - a better option for our planet.

Do not burn:

  • Any plastic
  • Waste oil
  • Any rubber or textiles
  • Any container containing chemicals
  • Aerosol cans
  • Any green garden wastes
  • Timber that is painted or treated with preservatives

Recycling is a better option for:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Timber
  • Plastic
  • Oil

If it can't be recycled take it to you local transfer station for proper disposal. Compost your garden waste or take it to your nearest transfer station.
