Land Management

Soil is one of Taranaki’s most important resources – sustaining our food and fibre industries – with over 60% of Taranaki’s total land area (723,610 ha) being used for pastoral farming. Almost 40% of the region is covered by indigenous or exotic forest, including Egmont National Park and other Crown reserves.

Soil types range from fertile well-drained soils on the ring plain and coastal terraces to steep erodible and relatively infertile soils of the inland hill country and the upper slopes of Mount Taranaki.

While human activities may increase the rate of erosion, research and monitoring shows that 92% of the region is sustainably managed.

The Council promotes sustainable land management through advisory and regulatory methods. The Council prefers to use non-regulatory methods by providing information and advice to farmers to promote voluntary change towards sustainable land management practices.
