Civil Defence Emergency Management
The Taranaki community must be prepared for when not if a major emergency occurs. And at an individual level we all need to know what to do in an emergency.
We need to be prepared today, to minimise the effects of any future emergency. Our response to and recovery from any type of emergency anywhere in the region will then be as fast and efficient as possible.
The planning and delivery of the civil defence emergency management role across the Taranaki region is the responsibility of the Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group. Representatives of the New Plymouth, Stratford and South Taranaki district councils and the Taranaki Regional Council make up the CDEM Group.
The CDEM Group Plan describes the roles and responsibilities of all the players in CDEM in Taranaki including local authorities, emergency services, lifeline utilities, government departments and organisations.
What's different under the new CDEM Act 2002
During an emergency the CDEM Group ensures that strategic advice and direction is provided to responding agencies, and that emergency welfare is delivered to the affected communities. The CDEM Group carries out it's responsibilities civil defence emergency management under the CDEM Act 2002.
