Comprehensive Farm Plans

All aspects of the farm's operation are examined in Comprehensive Farm Plans, which are generally prepared for properties in the eastern hillcountry.

Council staff support landowners to implement their farm plans. A detailed land resource inventory (soils, geology, vegetation , slope and erosion) of the property provides the basis for determining the sustainability of various land uses. From this information recommendations can then be made to the land user about land use and management options. Soil erosion problems are also covered by the plans, including stabilisation measures and protection of the soil's productivity.

More recent plans also indicate production potentials for different parts of the property and provide some basic economic analyses. The idea is to match land use to the potential of the land.

The Council supplies low cost poplar and willow plants to landowners, mainly for land stability purposes. Shelter, shade and timber uses are also increasing.
