Silage pits and feedlots

Leachate from silage pits and feedlots can contain contaminants that have the potential to affect the environment, particularly the quality of streams.

A Taranaki feedlot. As long as the discharges are controlled so that they do not or are not likely to reach a river or stream, the potential problems can be avoided.

Under the Fresh Water Plan you do not need a resource consent as long as:

  • The discharge point of the leachate is more than 25m away from a stream.
  • The discharge point is well away (more than 50m) from any water supply well or spring.
  • The discharge does not enter a river or stream.

If you cannot meet these conditions you will need to apply for a resource consent. Special conditions may be attached to the consent.
