Leachate from silage pits and feedlots can contain contaminants that have the potential to affect the environment, particularly the quality of streams.
As long as the discharges are controlled so that they do not or are not likely to reach a river or stream, the potential problems can be avoided.
Under the Fresh Water Plan you do not need a resource consent as long as:
- The discharge point of the leachate is more than 25m away from a stream.
- The discharge point is well away (more than 50m) from any water supply well or spring.
- The discharge does not enter a river or stream.
If you cannot meet these conditions you will need to apply for a resource consent. Special conditions may be attached to the consent.
