The effects of a public health emergency could be felt far and wide.
Whether as a direct result of an infectious disease or a secondary consequence from another hazard (such as water supply failure), public health impacts can be significant.
The Taranaki District Health Board is the primary agency for the co-ordination of public health response in Taranaki. Arrangements are in place for co-operation between the TDHB and the Taranaki CDEM Group should this be required for a large-scale public health threat.
During a local emergency, the Medical Officer of Health has special powers to deal with public health threats should this be necessary.
Pandemic influenza
Events in recent years have shown how important it is to be prepared for a potential pandemic which could arise from influenza or other infectious diseases.
Getting ready for a pandemic
- Follow the basic health rules - C-H-I-R-P to make yourself and your family safe:
Cover your coughs and sneezes - use tissues, dispose of them properly, then wash your hands.
Hygienic hands - wash hands often and dry them well.
Isolate yourself - keep at least a metre away from others and stay at home if you become ill.
Reduce germs in your home and workplace - regularly disinfect common surfaces like phones, handles, remote controls, taps, toys.
Prepare - put together an emergency plan and kit.
- Consult family and friends when preparing your plan - who could help with food and supplies if you and your household are ill? Keep phone numbers of people who live near you, and your family doctor, in a prominent place.
- Assemble and maintain emergency survival items.
- Get to know your neighbours.
- Get an annual flu jab.
- If you run a business or farm, plan for the impact of a pandemic.
