Applying fertiliser to land is generally permitted (by the Fresh Water Plan) without the need for a resource consent.
However, you need to make sure you use a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry approved fertiliser, and minimise the chances of the fertiliser drifting off your property or onto non-target areas.
If you are applying fertiliser by truck, tractor, or by hand, make sure it does not spread into any water (including streams, lakes, drains or wetlands). If you are applying fertiliser by air take care to avoid waterways.
You may be required to make sure that you can meet the conditions or to apply for a resource consent if you cannot meet the above requirements. REFER TO FRESH WATER PLAN
Hints for fertiliser application
- Minimise the amount of dust and odour produced.
- Consider the wind direction in relation to your property boundary and neighbours' houses.
- Don't spread fertilisers such as chicken litter on hot still afternoons.
