Environmental management in the private sector

The Taranaki Regional Council has produced an Environmental Management Guide to assist businesses and industry to improve environmental performance and prevent pollution.

It can be downloaded from this page, as can a Stormwater Management Plan Template.

Everyone has a responsibility to protect our environment. Businesses too need to be aware of their potential for pollution, and some, because of the nature of their work, need to be especially vigilant. The Environmental Management Guide is designed to help businesses to prevent pollution on their sites, to protect the environment and to ensure their good reputation for environmental responsibility.

The guide contains information on:

  • Drainage
  • Storage
  • Spills
  • Air
  • Waste Minimisation and Cleaner Production
  • Soil Contamination.

This Environmental Management Guide includes checklists to help you assess your site for actual and potential pollution, and examples of an action plan and spill guide.

What if the forklift tracks contaminants from the warehouse to the yard?
What if that container corroded, was overfilled or punctured, and there was a spill?
What if rainwater in the chemical storage bund becomes contaminated?
What if there was a spill in this area and the stormwater shutoff valve failed?

These are among questions raised in this Stormwater Management Plan template developed by the Taranaki Regional Council for local businesses.

The template aims to make it easier for businesses to take steps to reduce their environmental impact.

"A Stormwater Management Plan is compulsory for some industrial and trade operations but whether or not it is a legal requirement, we would recommend all businesses take a look at the template and think about the issues raised," says the Council's Director-Environment Quality, Gary Bedford.

"While the template may look complex at first glance, it can easily be adapted to suit the scale of any enterprise. And Council officers can always give advice."

The template is downloadable as a Word document, allowing for easy editing and adapting. Click on this link:
